Artist’s Statement:

Like most of my work, I approached the painting without a fixed idea in mind, allowing the accidental shapes and tones to suggest the final imagery. As I worked, a rough scene emerged - the meeting with the Witches upon the heath. A weary Macbeth and Banquo lead their victorious army homewards across the Scottish moorland. Three Witches perch like crows upon a lifeless tree that reaches its branches across the image as if trying to
ensnare Macbeth. One of the Weird Sisters beckons Macbeth forward, while another grips a sword tightly, and the third prepares a cauldron. To emphasise the otherworldly encounter between the characters, I played with the historical setting. Macbeth and Banquo are portrayed as 11th-century noblemen, whereas the witches are depicted with Bronze Age artefacts, hinting at mysterious ancient origins.
